The 15 EG4 problems owners actually report, and how long they lasted
We read through years of forum threads. Most problems are settings and wiring you can fix the same day. The long outages are warranty returns.
The EG4 12kPV and 18kPV are two of the most popular DIY hybrid inverters in the country, which means there are thousands of owner threads to learn from. We read them so you don’t have to.
Same-day fixes (most of the list)
- “No battery comms.” Wrong port, wrong protocol, or the master battery isn’t set to ID 1.
- Batteries on, no AC output off-grid. Off-grid output isn’t enabled, or firmware is old.
- App shows export when you’re importing. A current sensor is on backwards or on the wrong conductor.
- Settings changed after a firmware update. Screenshot every setting before you update.
- Monitoring offline. The inverter keeps running; the Wi-Fi dongle usually needs a power cycle or a better 2.4 GHz signal.
A few days
- Generator won’t charge. AC charge disabled, or the generator’s output isn’t clean enough.
- GFCI trips when the generator connects. Two neutral-ground bonds.
- High bus voltage faults. One owner traced his to a melting diode in an old combiner box.
Weeks: hardware failures
The longest outages in the forums are hardware failures waiting on a warranty return, with owners reporting anywhere from about a week to over a month. EG4 support runs through distributors, and response times vary.
Our EG4 12kPV install guide has a one-page fix for all 15 problems, with the owner’s question, the cause, the reported downtime and step-by-step troubleshooting.
