The FCC’s 2026 inverter ruling, explained for homeowners
Foreign-made, internet-connected solar inverters can no longer get new FCC approval. Here is what changed, what didn’t, and what it means for the system on your roof.
On July 28, 2026 the Federal Communications Commission added foreign-produced power inverters to its Covered List, the list of equipment it considers a risk to national security. Equipment on that list can’t receive the FCC authorization it needs to be imported, marketed or sold in the United States.
Three weeks later, on August 20, the FCC narrowed the rule. It now applies to grid-interactive inverters (the kind listed to UL 1741) that have, or can accept, remote-communication hardware. It also exempted inverters that qualify for the federal 45X domestic-manufacturing credit or meet the Buy American standard.
What it means if you already have solar
Nothing changes for installed systems. Models that already held an FCC grant before July 28 remain legal to sell, install and operate. Your inverter will keep running, and you can still buy replacements of the same model while they are available.
Where it bites: the next model
The rule blocks new authorizations. When a foreign manufacturer releases a new version of an inverter, that new model can’t be authorized unless it qualifies for an exemption. Over the next few product cycles, that shrinks the list of foreign-made, internet-connected inverters available in the US.
“US company” and “made in the US” are different tests. Check where the inverter is built, not where the brand is headquartered.
How to buy an inverter now
- Check the country of manufacture on the datasheet and the unit label.
- Ask your distributor whether the exact model number held an FCC grant before July 28, 2026, or qualifies for 45X or Buy American.
- Think about replacement. An inverter lasts 10 to 15 years. Choosing a US-built platform keeps you clear of the rule when you replace or expand.
- Keep the paperwork. Save the invoice showing the model number and purchase date.
US-built options for homes
| Platform | Type | Built |
|---|---|---|
| Enphase IQ8 | Microinverters, AC-coupled batteries | US assembly |
| Tesla Powerwall 3 | Integrated inverter + battery | US |
| MidNite Solar Rosie | Off-grid inverter/charger | Arlington, Washington |
We cover all three, plus the popular EG4 12kPV, in our step-by-step install guides.
